Can an AI be your therapist? No. AI can’t be your therapist, and in several states it’s now against the law for an AI to present itself as one. But AI can be a genuinely useful place to process what’s happening to you, if you know what it is and what it isn’t. I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist, I’ve sat with couples in the room for years, and I built an AI coaching tool. So here’s my honest take.
AI is a mirror, not a witness
Stuck in the same fight again?
Talk it through with Figlet right now. Private, judgment free, built on 17 years of couples therapy.
A woman once showed me something AI had written for her about why her husband wanted a divorce. It was articulate. It was also shaped almost entirely by her own wounds, her own emotional frame, and the defended story she was living inside. Nothing in it reflected her husband’s experience, or what was happening between them.
That’s the thing most people miss. AI isn’t neutral. AI isn’t objective. AI isn’t wise. AI is a mirror. It reflects the emotional state of the person who is prompting it. If you come in with shame, it echoes your shame. If you come in with blame, it echoes your blame. If your defended self speaks, AI will simply give it better grammar.
Why that matters so much in relationships
In every distressed couple I see, each partner is already a world expert on what’s wrong with the other one. If I hosted a global conference on everything wrong with you, your partner would be the keynote speaker. And vice versa.
AI just makes you an even more eloquent keynote speaker at the wrong conference.
The only conference that heals a relationship is the one where you both present as a team, on the cycle you’re caught in together. An AI that only hears your side can’t see that cycle unless it’s built to look for it. (I wrote more about this in using ChatGPT as a therapist.)
What an AI therapist can do for you
Used well, AI can be a real help.
- Somewhere to go at 2am. When you’re flooded and there’s nobody to call, it can help you slow down before you send the text you’ll regret.
- A way back to yourself. Instead of polishing your story about your partner, it can keep asking you: what’s happening in me right now? Where do I feel it? What am I really afraid of?
- Preparation, not a replacement. It can help you process your reactivity, find the vulnerable feeling underneath, and turn toward your partner from there.
What an AI therapist can’t do
- It can’t hold you while you shake. Shame doesn’t need better language. It needs connection. It needs a witness. A machine can’t be in the room with you.
- It can’t see both of you. It only knows what you tell it.
- It can’t treat anything. Depression, trauma, addiction, abuse and serious anxiety need a licensed human.
How to use AI without it making things worse
If you’re going to talk to AI about your relationship, use it the way I’d want you to use it in my office. I call it reflexive participation, and it has three simple steps.
First, admit you’re affected. Not “he’s impossible.” Just: I’m really affected by this right now.
Second, describe how you’re affected, in your body. My chest is tight. My jaw is clenched. I want to run.
Third, let yourself feel it. Not analyze it. Feel it, for a minute or two.
Then ask the AI, and yourself, two questions. What is it in me that’s really happening right now? And what’s the system I’m co-creating with my partner? If an AI keeps you on those two questions, it’s helping. If it just keeps agreeing with you about your partner, close the app.
When you need a real therapist
Get a real therapist if:
- the same fight keeps happening and neither of you can step out of it
- there’s an affair, a betrayal, or a breach of trust you can’t get past
- you’re thinking about leaving and you’re not sure
- there’s any violence, intimidation or fear at home
- anxiety, low mood or drinking is stopping you from living your life
If you’re in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.
Why I built Figlet as coaching, not therapy
I built Figlet because most people in relationship pain will never get to a couples therapist. It’s expensive, there are waiting lists, and your partner often won’t come.
Figlet is coaching. It doesn’t diagnose and it doesn’t treat. What it does is bring the approach I use in the room, the Empathi Method built on EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy, the gold standard of couples work), to the moment you actually need it. It’s built to do the opposite of a mirror: to help you see the cycle you and your partner are caught in, instead of just agreeing with you.
And if what you’re dealing with is less about your partner and more about you, the overthinking, the spiraling, the 3am worry, there’s Figlet Life Coaching. It doesn’t try to talk you out of the feeling. It asks: is it okay if we just be anxious for a minute? And now that you’re letting yourself feel it, what happens next?
Your first 10 messages are free. If it’s your relationship, start relationship coaching. If it’s you, start Life Coaching.

Common questions
Is there such a thing as an AI therapist?
No AI is a licensed therapist. Some apps use the phrase loosely, and states including California, Nevada and Illinois now restrict AI from presenting itself as a therapist or licensed provider.
Is it safe to talk to AI about my relationship?
It can help you reflect and calm down, as long as you remember it mostly reflects you back to you. It’s not a substitute for professional help when things are serious.
What’s the difference between AI coaching and therapy?
Therapy is licensed treatment from a human professional. Coaching helps you understand what’s happening and what to try next. Figlet is coaching, built by a licensed couples therapist.
When should I see a therapist instead?
If there’s violence, an affair you can’t move past, serious anxiety or depression, or you’ve been stuck in the same fight for months, see a licensed therapist. If you’re in crisis, call or text 988.
