Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Figs O'Sullivan's approach to couples therapy different from traditional marriage counseling?+
I reject the whole "communication skills" nonsense that most couples therapy peddles. The fight isn't about what you think it's about. When couples come to me, they're stuck in what I call the Waltz of Pain - two childhood strategies colliding in the present. One partner is a Relentless Lover protesting for closeness, the other is a Reluctant Lover retreating for safety. Traditional therapy tries to teach you how to argue better. I teach you how to see that you're both just scared kids trying not to get hurt again.
How does Figs work with his therapist wife Teale at empathi.com?+
Teale and I are living proof that therapists' marriages aren't immune to the same struggles everyone faces. We're Wounded Healers - we lead with our own vulnerability and the repairs we've had to make in our relationship. That's how we normalize the mess without shaming people for it. At empathi.com, we're trying to democratize this work because your relationship is too important to treat therapy as a commodity. We model through ourselves that love requires proof-of-work, not just good intentions.
What is empathi.com's mission to democratize mental health care?+
Most people can't access quality couples therapy - it's expensive, there aren't enough trained therapists, and frankly, a lot of what's out there is generic garbage. We're building tools like Figlet, our AI relationship coach, to make real attachment-based interventions available to everyone. It's the next best thing to seeing me live. We're not trying to replace human connection, but we can teach people to recognize their patterns and start doing the emotional repair work that actually changes relationships.
