Look, I want to sit with you in this question for a second, because I hear what’s underneath it. You’re not just asking about logistics. You’re asking, “Can I trust again? Is it safe to let my guard down? Is this real?”
And that is such a human, valid, important question to be sitting with right now.

Ask Figlet about whether it is over.
Here’s what I know from working with couples where there’s been an affair. The question of “is it really over” is never just answered by a conversation. It’s not answered by your partner saying, “Yes, it’s over, I promise.” Your organism, your nervous system, millions of years old, knows the difference between words and felt reality. And right now, your nervous system is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. It’s on high alert. It’s scanning for danger. That’s not a flaw in you. That is you working perfectly.
What actually rebuilds the knowing, the felt sense that it’s over, is not a single moment of reassurance. It’s time, multiplied by consistency of behavior, multiplied by transparency. And here’s the thing I always tell people. It’s going to take longer than your partner thinks it should. Probably significantly longer. And that’s okay. That’s not a sign something is wrong with you.
Transparency looks like this. If you want to look at their phone, they hand it over without making you feel like you’re crazy for asking. If they get defensive, that defensiveness tells you something. Not necessarily that the affair is ongoing, but that they haven’t fully understood the depth of what they broke yet.
And here’s the deeper truth. The question “is it really over” is actually pointing at a bigger question, which is “are you really here now, in a way you weren’t before?” Because the affair wasn’t just the physical thing. It was the lying. The gaslighting. The reality being pulled from under your feet. All of those are individual betrayals inside the big one, and each one of them deserves to be honored and healed.
Your body stays on high alert no matter what they promise.

So watch for this. Not just what your partner says, but whether they can sit with the depth of what they did without rushing you to get over it. Whether they can tolerate being reminded of your pain without getting defensive. Whether they stop trying to get back to good quickly and start actually being willing to sit in the discomfort of what they caused.
When I’m working with a couple in this situation, I’m looking for the moment where the person who did the betraying stops trying to escape their own guilt and actually lets themselves feel the terror of what it means to have really hurt the person they love. When that happens, something shifts. The person who was betrayed can feel it. You will feel it too, when it’s real.
Trust your gut here. You’re not paranoid. You’re not broken. You’re doing exactly what you’re supposed to do. The question now is whether your partner is willing to do the slow, unglamorous, patient work of earning their way back to you.
That’s what will tell you if it’s really over.
