You know, this is one of the most important things I get to tell people who come to see me, especially those who grew up without a secure base.
You did not get the attachment experience you needed early on. Maybe your parents were emotionally unavailable, or unpredictable, or just not there in the ways that mattered. And so your nervous system learned to protect itself. It built walls, or it learned to cling, or both at different times. And for years, maybe decades, that became just… who you are. How you love. How you fight. How you run.
You know the theory, but safety still feels out of reach.

But here is what I want you to hear clearly: attachment security is not a fixed trait you either have or you don’t. It is something you can earn. Through therapy, through doing the actual work, not just reading about it, not just getting it cognitively. Because getting it cognitively is not enough. I say that to people all the time. If understanding it in your head was enough, I would just hand you a book and send you home.
What earns secure attachment is something different. It is lived experience. It is being in a relationship, whether that is with a therapist or a partner, where you feel something go from bad to back to good again. Where rupture happens, as it always does, and then repair follows. And you survive it. And you feel it in your body, not just understand it in your mind.
That is the thing I see in my clinical work over and over. The couples who build the deepest conviction in each other are not the ones who never fought. They are the ones who went through something hard and found their way back. Every single time that happens, the attachment grows stronger. The trust deepens. Because now it is not blind faith, it is earned trust. You have evidence. You have lived experience of the repair.
In therapy, we call that the proof of work of love. The visible, felt evidence that you showed up through the hard thing and chose connection over self-protection. When a client who grew up with an alcoholic parent, or no model for healthy love at all, sits in my office and for the first time lets themselves be truly seen, truly held in their pain without someone running away or shaming them or trying to fix it… that moment is the beginning of earned security. That is the limbic experience that actually transforms things.

And here is what I want you to hold onto. Rupture is not a sign that security is impossible for you. Rupture is actually where security gets built. The people who come through the other side of hard moments, who stay in the discomfort long enough to actually feel their way through it rather than going over it or under it or around it, those are the people whose attachment shifts.
It takes time. It takes repetition. It takes someone who knows how to hold the frame when you are convinced you are beyond repair.
But you are not beyond repair. Not even close.
